Matt Warman meets Hugh Bonneville and Adrian Lester, the stars of BBC1's new archaeological drama Bonekickers What would you expect next from the team that brought you Life on Mars, Spooks, Hustle, Ashes to Ashes and even a couple of episodes of This Life? It’s almost certainly not “a series of six airport novels”, but that’s how writer Matthew Graham describes BBC1’s new series Bonekickers. Graham, together with Ashley Pharaoh, has become one of the BBC’s most bankable writer/producers because of the extraordinary success of the time-travelling adventures of first Sam Tyler (Life on Mars) and then Alex Drake (Ashes to Ashes), as played by John Simm and Keeley Hawes respectively.   Stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Hugh Bonneville, Julie Graham and Adrian Lester Now the much-hyped Bonekickers is groundbreaking in a very different sense. Starring Adrian Lester, Hugh Bonneville, Julie Graham and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, it tells the story of a group of archaeologists, who make a series of increasingly dramatic discoveries “It’s CSI meets Indiana Jones,” says Adrian Lester. “There’s an element of the crime procedural show, there’s science, conspiracy theory ? and there’s a big underlying mystery that goes through the whole six-episode series.” Each find resonates, too, with modern-day issues. The opening episode, for instance, deals with the discovery of a piece of wood that might be a part of the True Cross. We then encounter an extremist - and extremely aggressive - Christian cult which tries to take over the site, and later beheads a Muslim. In the second episode, parallels are drawn between a discovery related to the slave trade and the campaign of a (fictional) black American presidential candidate. A later instalment involves an excursion to Babylon, aka Iraq. “What all this reveals,” says Adrian Lester, “is how the past is very much our present too.”   As Dr Ben Ergha, Lester’s character is a forensics expert, and the most serious and straightforward member of a close-knit team. That’s in contrast to Julie Graham’s driven and headstrong Dr Gillian Magwilde, and Hugh Bonneville as dour, bookish Professor Gregory Parton. “My character may be like a human Google,” says Bonneville, “but he’s also pretty grumpy all the time. He’s got a brilliant mind, yet he’s not bought much in the way of clothes since the early Nineties, he drinks too much, and he’s given up on ambition. In short, he’s happiest blowing dust off books in a library.” The characters’ expertise in their fields meant that the show’s team was eager to engage the services of a real-life expert to make sure that the science was right. Bristol University’s Head of Archaeology Mark Horton provided official supervision, and Bonneville says that he tried to put Horton’s real-life enthusiasm at the heart of his on-screen character. “While taking solace in the past, he also finds it deeply thrilling,” says Bonneville of Horton. Graham’s previous best-known projects also dealt with different historical periods. In Life on Mars he took viewers back to 1973, and then in Ashes to Ashes, to 1981. Even if viewers do find Bonekickers, which is fast-paced and also rather far-fetched, similar in feel to airport novels, they should also enjoy its vivid encounters with the ancient past. "이 쇼는 CSI와 인디아나 존스의 결합이라고 할 수 있을겁니다. 거기엔 범죄의 요소와 과학과 음모이론? 을 포함하고 있어요 그리고 이 6개의 에피소드는 커다란 미스터리를 기초로 합니다." 출연 배우 애드리안 레스터의 이야기이다. 오프닝 에피소드는 (True Cross:아마도 실제 예수가 매달렸던?)나무 십자가의 파편이 발견되고 이것을 뺐으려는 극단적이고 공격적인 기독교 숭배자들이 무슬림의 목을 벤다는 이야기이다. 두번째 에피소드에서는, 노예 매매와 흑인 대통령(허구의)후보의 선거캠페인에 대한 것으로 바빌론으로 (이라크)으로 여행을 하게된다. 에드리안 레스터가 연기하는 Ben Ergha 박사는 법학 전문가로 진지하며 팀을 단결시키고 올바로 이끄는 사람이며 제멋대로고 분방한  Dr Gillian Magwilde(줄리 고헴)과는 반대되는 캐릭터이다. 여기에 무뚝뚝하고 까다로운 성격의 소유자이자 독서광인 그레고리 파톤 역은 휴 보나빌이 맡았다. 그의 말에 따르면 자신의 캐릭터는 일종의 인간 구글에 해당한다고 할만큼 명석한 두뇌의 소유자라고한다. 또한 그는 아무 야심없이 도서관에서 먼지쌓인 책을 불어가며 읽는걸 행복해하는 사람이라고. 이 드라마의 공식 수퍼바이저는 브리스톨 대학의 고고학과 학장인 마크 호튼교수이다. 극중 그레고리 파톤이 호튼 교수의 캐릭터를 바탕으로 했으며 그레고리 역을 맡은 배우 보나빌은 마크 호튼의 열정과 실제 삶을 스크린에 표현하기 위해 노력했다고 한다. "그는 과거에서 위안을 찾기도 하지만 때로는 굉장한 스릴을 찾아내기도하죠" 호튼에 관해 보나빌은 이야기 한다. 고헴의 알려져 있는 프로젝트는 역시 과거를 다룬것들로 . 라이프온마스는 1973년 애쉬스투 에쉬스는 1981년을 소재로 했다. Bonekickers는 일단 라이프온마스의 작가 메튜 고헴의 새 드라마란것 만으로 눈길을 끄는 작품이다.

더불어 인디아나 존스와 CSI를 합쳐놓은 작품이라는 설명은 이런류의 드라마를 좋아하는 시청자들의 흥미를 끌기 충분해 보인다.

어딘지 낯이 익다 싶은 Gugu Mbatha-Raw는 닥터후에서 마사존스의 동생 티쉬역을 맡았던 배우!
